Challenge
Public Health England set out to improve discoverability of research data held by NHS England during COVID. NHS Digital asked Peru Consulting to bring together delivery team to help drive up quality in data and processes
Approach
- Peru brought together a multi disciplined team made from across the NHS, HDR UK and PHE to help curate, process and publish metadata to improve rated quality.
- We focused on business outcomes and user experience over technology implementation
- We delivered a set of prototypes of new process for building and assuring metadata to a robust standard and made a step change in process efficiency leading to reduction in manual intervention and improvement in time to complete
- Introduction and refinement of automated processes utilising a Central Metadata platform, including a service wrapper to enable platform scaling and ensure quality
Outcomes
- Improved data discoverability by defining data standards for meta data
- Defined and delivered a standardised approach on how to record information delivering consistency and quality across multiple data collections.
- Delivered the first metadata automated interface for use by public catalogue services.
- 95%+ of NHS research data information awarded Platinum and Gold quality status.
- NHS move from bottom 25% of Data Controllers and Publishers in the UK, to top 10% for quality.
